A key creative force responsible for the iconic survival game is crafting his return with a fresh title. This inventive adventure, called Coven of the Chicken Foot, represents the debut for his development house, Wildflower Interactive, and it will build on the legacy he helped create prioritizing dynamic AI partners.
Shown for the first time at a recent industry showcase, Coven of the Chicken Foot functions as an adventure game blending puzzles and platforming. The game follows a seasoned spellcaster, a protagonist who defies typical power fantasies. The foundational premise stemmed from a goal to rethink the typical hero’s journey.
"Consider a scenario where you lacked traditional weapons? Perhaps you are not built for battle? What if you’re a little old lady?" posed the director. "I thought it was really fascinating to question the essence of heroism. A hero is about fighting your way through problems, but it’s also about dedication, resolve, and tenacity."
Even though the title appears distinct on the surface, its core innovation evolves from the character dynamics seen in The Last of Us. The game's conception sprang from one pivotal question: "Is it possible to design Ellie truly living and learning based on player actions?"
Your strange critter partner within this adventure is far from a scripted follower. The director likens it to a toddler which observes and responds in three key stages. To begin with, it exhibits curiosity, potentially leading to playful hijinks. Then, it moves into a mimicry phase. In the end, it analyzes to understand to learn how things work.
This intricate technology seeks to generate a unique story for each player. The creative lead highlights that Coven of the Chicken Foot will be a slower-paced, exploration-driven experience instead of a linear, combat-centric story.
"Anytime I tried traditional three-act structure for this project, the dynamic felt wrong," Straley explained. "The liveliness of this relationship lies in the fact that you as a player are going to have unique moments and stories compared to my playthrough."
By prioritizing player-defined experiences, Coven of the Chicken Foot signifies both an evolution and a significant shift from Straley's well-known franchises. The project is presently targeting computer systems.
