Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Gets a Major Renewal for Two More Seasons.

Last October, Adult Swim welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network unveiled a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often characterized by bleakness, this show's earnestness found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Executive Acclaim

Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and supported its uniquely offbeat appeal.

"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about watching this endearing family go about their daily lives.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running layer of irony. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

What Comes Next

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially be part of that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to experience the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
