All Fans is Invited to Be the Fourth Haim Bandmate.

"Do you know when you'll be chatting with the Haim sisters?" a message arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their extra sister."

However, there remains a single issue: The sender also longs to be the Haims' additional sibling. Furthermore, we are not alone. A host of famous fans have publicly begged for the honor.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey playing gigs at local delicatessens with their parents. Today, they are repeated Grammy nominees.

Similar to the best ensembles, they're a close trio. Their visuals repeatedly show them striding in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such unfettered happiness you inevitably think, "I want to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members told us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a bass'," says Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That is the ultimate honour. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate others to start a band."

"And thus anyone gets an invitation to be the honorary part of the family."

Historic Recognition

The group are connecting from a break, where they're recovering after an major tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-female band ever in contention for the award.

"I follow the lists every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," says Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the nomination is deeply felt by the trio.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a major achievement," adds Alana. "However we're just grateful for the women that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Candor

The record emerged from a time of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that odd in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The lyrics track endings and partings. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they are becoming.

"I love description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to actively work on blocking the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Music

That newfound confidence called for a new sound – more organic and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Humor

The band's honesty inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic tales.

A former partner broke up with Este over a medical consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Future

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their standing in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide audience.

Yet the band will forever be their primary focus.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was a young child," shares Alana. "There is no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still making music."
