Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer behind many legendary styles worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.

Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, such as the pastel suits that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."

This news arrives shortly after he debuted his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he began designing menswear at Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.

He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in crafting sculptural silhouettes made him a "true original," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.

By the 1990s, he began working on outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including various looks for her US tour following her marriage.

With a vocation that covered half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Performative Style: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The industry laments the passing to a true visionary whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
