California's Governor States He Is Considering a White House Bid in 2028

Gavin Newsom, a prominent member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he plans to make a decision about whether to run for president in 2028 once the 2026 midterm elections conclude.

"Yes, I couldn't be truthful if I denied it," the governor remarked when pressed about giving serious thought to a presidential run following the 2026 midterms. "I'd just be lying. And I'm not."

The governor's current term as California's leader ends in early 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. Yet, he emphasized that any choice is still years away.

"Fate will determine that," he added.

Increased Visibility as a Trump Critic

Newsom has emerged as a high-profile critic of the current federal leadership, leveraging his social media accounts and advocating for a initiative that would expand the party's representation in Congress in following Republican redistricting efforts. This move has invited attacks from political opponents.

Controversy Over Funds

Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor does not care about Californians in a Sunday segment on Fox News. The secretary revealed a strategy to cut federal funds from California and warned eliminating the power to provide commercial driver's licenses.

"I'm about to pull $160 million from the state," Duffy stated, following a recently reported deadly accident in California involving an unauthorized semi truck driver that resulted in fatalities and injured individuals.

Newsom's office highlighted that the national authorities had renewed the individual's authorization repeatedly, which enabled him to obtain a trucking license under U.S. law.

Duffy had previously stated he was withholding $40 million from California for failing to implement linguistic standards for commercial drivers.

Firm Rebuttal from the Governor's Office

"Former D-list reality star, now cabinet member, continues to misunderstand national statutes," the governor's team said in a recent comment addressing Duffy's threats. "For now, unlike this clown, we focus on reality: California truck drivers had a fatal crash rate nearly 40% lower than the countrywide rate. Texas – the only state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Data speaks for itself. The federal leadership misleads."

Voter Sentiment and Future Prospects

A recently conducted study revealed that a majority of the party and 48% of all registered voters believed that Newsom should run for the White House in 2028. After the current administration began, Newsom's favorability has increased to an typical level of 33.5% from around 30%, while his negative ratings has fallen from an average of previous highs to current figures.

In previous months, the governor commented while traveling several swing states that he had "no clue" about his plans for 2028.

He noted his earlier challenges, including being identified as dyslexic at the age of five.

"The notion that a person who scored 960 on the SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was always in the back of the classroom – the fact that this is even suggested is, alone, extraordinary," he commented. "It's anyone's guess? I am eager to see who presents themselves in the next election and who answers the call. And that is the issue for the voters."
