Contaminated Shrimp Issue: The Nation Faces Contamination in Key Industrial Area

Investigation and Detection of Contamination

Indonesian officials launched an inquiry when the US Food and Drug Administration detected Caesium-137, a radioactive isotope, in a shipment of frozen coated shrimp exported by a local company.

The FDA issued an advisory instructing distributors and sellers to dispose of the goods and avoid selling it, although the found level was well under the agency's intervention limit. They noted that the quantity of Caesium-137 it had detected would not present an immediate hazard to consumers.

The authority explained: “The main impact on health of concern after longer term, repeated low dose contact (for example through consumption of contaminated products or water over a period) is an increased chance of cancer, resulting from damage to DNA within living cells.”

Widespread Contamination and Medical Examinations

Radiation scans showed at least 22 factories in the manufacturing area were affected. The official team did not identify the 21 other manufacturing facilities, but confirmed they would immediately undergo decontamination processes conducted by the country's nuclear agency.

The environment minister stated that residents residing in strongly polluted areas would be moved until the location was decontaminated, adding that the well-being of the residents was the “main concern”.
