French Members of Parliament Consider No-Confidence Motions That Could Bring Down PM Sébastien Lecornu

A key point to note is that today's termed no-confidence motions need backing of two hundred eighty-nine out of France's 577 members of parliament in order to bring down Sébastien Lecornu along with his new government.

Right-Wing Backing Amid Disagreements

The conservative LR party are largely anticipated to back Lecornu, despite the fact that they don't like the move to pause the president's retirement age changes to win support from left-wing parties.

Conservative lawmaker Eric Ciotti posted an image showing mostly vacant seats from his party during the session, pointing out their lack of courage. His party hold just fifty parliamentary seats – but if a handful of them vote against Lecornu's administration, this might swing the result.

Eric Ciotti called out the failure of Republicans to attend during the no-confidence motion.

Left-Wing Backing with Conditions

The Socialist Party have 69 seats while the PM needs their votes to remain in power. Due to his decision to suspend the rise in retirement age, he's expected to secure the backing of most of them. However, several Socialist MPs stated they will back the far-left censure motion – the result hinges on how many break ranks.

Lawmaker Laurent Baumel warned the prime minister in parliament that just because his party supported him now, that didn't mean future support in the future.

Baumel cautioned the PM, stating: Prime Minister, you need to know our decision not to censure now isn't in any way a long-term agreement.

He went on to praise the prime minister's real concession regarding the pause the pension reform.
