Star Wars fans are hardly bereft of choices when it comes to stellar gaming adventures wielding the iconic energy blades, but the galaxy envisioned by George Lucas is far beyond a battleground for fighting. Rarely have games have grasped this more thoroughly than Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which was forged in the old-school computer role-playing game vein that made companies like Obsidian and BioWare legendary. Now, after several fits and starts, a major gaming showcase has revealed that the community will soon be able to experience a spiritual follow-up to the beloved franchise. It's called Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic.
Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is labeled "a new single-player narrative-driven action RPG and spiritual heir to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic." Casey Hudson, previously at BioWare and the creative lead of the original KOTOR, is leading it at Arcanaut Studios.
“When we created the original KOTOR, we wanted to forge a definitive Star Wars experience — designing an adventure that was made of all the things we longed to doing as Star Wars fans,” Hudson stated. “Now, 25 years after we first conceived that game, our goals are just as ambitious. Fate of the Old Republic represents an possibility to delve into a modern vision of a definitive Star Wars experience, using state-of-the-art technology and game design, and an all-new story written specifically to deliver on the blend of player agency and immersion in Star Wars that was at the heart of KOTOR.”
The news is somewhat of a surprise, given that 2022 saw a contemporary effort at an Old Republic game get pushed back with no date. However, rumors had suggested that a reimagining of KotOR, as well as one of its sequel, had been in the works as recently as March 2025.
Here is the summary for the new title:
Developed by Arcanaut Studios in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a new single-player narrative-driven action RPG and spiritual successor to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Led by Casey Hudson, Game director of the original Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy, the team of veteran game developers and storytellers at Arcanaut Studios is crafting an epic interactive adventure across a galaxy on the brink of rebirth where every decision shapes your path towards light or darkness. Fate is in your hands.
The iconic role-playing games, which have seen recent ports to platforms like the Switch, are renowned for their narrative-focused, decision-based, and RPG-stat-heavy approach to Star Wars. The games were impactful enough that they accidentally defined how people picture the Old Republic time period as a whole, to this day. The games ventured to question many beliefs of Jedi lore that are often treated as inarguable, like whether the group and its understanding of the Force are correct. The second game, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, went in a much darker direction by asking if the world might not be better off without the Jedi at all. Both games are highly regarded by fans decades after their release, but the follow-up in particular is viewed by many as one of the finest pieces of Star Wars media created.
And now, several years after seeing a cinematic trailer for a Knights of the Old Republic remake, fans are finally receiving another game in the same vein. Given the craving for rich games like Baldur's Gate 3 or Divinity: Original Sin, a new take on Knights of the Old Republic that's developed with care has the chance to be wildly successful.
