Hollywood Director Found Responsible of Scamming Platform Netflix For Millions for Phantom Series

A prominent Hollywood director was convicted this week for masterminding a plot that swindled the entertainment platform Netflix out of a staggering sum allocated for a television series that was never produced, authorities said.

Particulars of the Legal Proceedings

Carl Rinsch, best known for helming the movie *47 Ronin* featuring the actor Keanu Reeves, was convicted on multiple counts including financial fraud and money laundering, as per court records and government attorneys in New York.

"Today's conviction shows that when someone takes money from backers, we will follow the money and ensure they face consequences," stated the prosecutor.

The Alleged Fraudulent Plan

Authorities claimed that Netflix had initially disbursed Rinsch around $44 million for an incomplete science-fiction series called *White Horse*. Subsequently, the streamer provided an additional payment after he asserted he needed extra capital to finalize production.

However, rather than using the funds for the show, Rinsch redirected the capital to a private bank account. From there, he engaged in a series of failed stock market bets, losing about 50% of the multi-million dollar sum within a few months, prosecutors said.

Lavish Purchases with Studio Money

After the failed investments, Rinsch reportedly invested the remaining funds into the cryptocurrency market, netting some profit. However, he then deposited those funds into his own bank account.

What followed next involved significant high-end expenditures. Prosecutors detailed purchases that included:

• 5 Rolls-Royce automobiles and a sports car.
• Over six hundred and fifty-two thousand dollars on timepieces and apparel.
• A pair of custom mattresses for around $638,000.
• An additional $295,000 on high-end linens and home furnishings.

Furthermore, he reportedly used a portion of the funds to pay off about $1.8 million in personal debt balances.

Court Response and Next Steps

In a statement, Rinsch's attorney expressed disagreement with the outcome, arguing it "could set a concerning precedent for artists who become embroiled in contractual and artistic disputes with their benefactors."

Rinsch, forty-eight, did not finish the show. His sentencing date is set for April. The company involved chose not to issue a statement on the matter.
