A minimum of 16 individuals perished and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when attackers shot at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.
In the latest update, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 injured people were transported to medical facilities.
The deceased are still awaiting publicly named, but authorities state their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Known as a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She told the moments before the shooting, explaining they were standing when the gunfire started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.
The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.
The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message read.
A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.
A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.
From the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with a number in critical condition. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.
A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
