Is it Wise to Employ Ice Cubes to Hydrate Your Houseplants?

This Primary Issue
Countless potted plant succumbs to overzealous attention; dousing your plants each time you pass by proves terminal. The practice for watering pledges more gradual and more deliberate watering. But, can it actually deliver?

The Suggested Hack
Set a couple of frozen cubes on top of the growing medium. The theory suggests when the ice thaws, it steadily dispenses water, allowing the roots a chance to take up it and averting overly wet conditions.

A Closer Look
This technique works best for compact containers and species averse to excess moisture, like moth orchids. Yet, the majority of tropical houseplants are averse to cold temperatures. A plant's roots evolved for warmth, and icy water can damage or hurt them. The surrounding temperature is a big role in the hack's success: in a toasty environment, the ice will dissolve rapidly, giving little value, but in a cool area it may stay excessively, cooling the roots and slowing water uptake. Make sure to ensure ice cubes are composed of fresh, potable water and never force them directly against stems or delicate roots.

The Experiment
This was tested on a moth orchid. Using two cubes each week resulted in the roots nicely hydrated preventing sogginess. However, employing the identical trick on a prayer plant led to browning at the tips of the leaves, a telltale symptom of cold stress.

The Ultimate Assessment
The ice cube method can succeed for Phalaenopsis, but it isn't ideal for many warm-climate indoor plants and relies greatly on ambient temperature. Thus, this hack is not recommended; lukewarm water poured carefully continues to be the most reliable way to thoroughly water your leafy friends.
