John Bolton Turns Himself In to Face Allegations of Disseminating Sensitive Information

John Bolton, who worked in the Trump's initial term, made his way at a US courthouse to surrender to law enforcement facing charges of improperly handling classified information.

The 18 charges arise from claims that he shared or retained sensitive materials, comprising some labeled as top secret.

Bolton, that parted with the administration contentiously, has become one of the Trump's strongest outspoken opponents.

The formal accusation makes Bolton, seventy-six, the latest of the US president's political opponents to be indicted in recent weeks.

On Friday, Bolton did not respond to shouted questions as he entered the courthouse in a Maryland city to surrender to authorities.

He is expected to make an initial appearance before a judge and may have to stop at the federal marshals' facility for "possible" fingerprinting and booking photo.

Prosecutors have accused Bolton of using personal messaging apps and electronic mail to wrongfully share classified data.

"The materials disclosed intelligence about upcoming threats, international foes, and foreign-policy relations," prosecutors wrote.

Addressing the charges, Bolton said he would defend his "legal actions".

He added he had "become the most recent focus in using the Justice Department to charge those he [Trump] considers to be his enemies with charges that were declined before or misrepresent the facts."

Details of the Indictment

The formal charges issued this recently alleged Bolton of sharing "journal-style notes" with two unidentified persons, and using his private email to transmit messages with sensitive materials.

The document also claims that between 2019 and 2021, Bolton was allegedly the victim of a hacking attack from a "digital entity thought to be associated with the Islamic Republic of Iran" that gained access his account, exposing the classified materials.

Bolton has been scrutinised for his handling of sensitive data since two years ago, when he sought to release a memoir about his time in the first Trump administration.

The Justice Department attempted to halt the publication, claiming it could contain classified information.
