Kristi Noem States Military Shooting Perpetrator Had Been Radicalized in the United States

Kristi Noem, serving as homeland security secretary, asserted on Sunday that the individual in the National Guard incident in Washington DC was radicalized within the United States and pointed fingers at the Biden administration, even though the individual's refugee status was approved under Donald Trump.

Background of the Shooting Suspect

The shooting suspect, 29-year-old the person in question, was awarded asylum under the former government in spring 2025. He had worked with CIA backed units in Afghanistan, arriving in the US in September 2021 under an Operation Allies Welcome.

It is our assessment extremism took hold since he’s been here in this country,” the secretary remarked on NBC’s Meet the Press. “Our investigation indicates it was through local networks and state, and we’re going to continue to interview his contacts, relatives, who talk to them.”

Political Reactions and Immigration Scrutiny

The former leadership used the event as justification to pause and reassess asylum and green card petitions.

Noem asserted “vetting is happening upon entry, and that was completely abandoned under Joe Biden’s administration”.

“All that vetting information gathered under Joe Biden’s administration,” said Noem. “The vetting process all happened under Joe Biden’s administration.”

Removal Operations and Legal Disputes

The official also refuted that she disobeyed a court directive when she authorized deportation flights to El Salvador to continue, attributing the issue to “partisan” and “extreme” judicial figures.

These remarks were prompted by questioning on NBC’s Meet the Press on the weekend about whether she was responsible to continue the deportation flights for migrants from Venezuela earlier this year, as the Department of Justice has alleged.

“We’ll continue to do the right thing, proceed diligently and protect Americans, regardless of which activist judicial figure comes out and tries to stop us,” Noem said.

She also was featured on ABC’s This Week on Sunday, where she verified the operations were under her authority.

“Certainly, I made that decision and that decision was within my jurisdiction and following the law and legal framework under presidential guidance focused on getting high-risk individuals and gangs and cartels out of our country,” Noem said. “We face a partisan judicial figure and I understand, as noted, we’re still in litigation with this against this activist judge persistently attempting to stop us ensuring public safety.”

Judicial Assertions and Contempt Investigation

The Department of Justice asserted the decision did not violate the court mandate. US district Judge the presiding official in the capital had ordered removal operations already in the air return to the US in spring 2025, but the secretary instructed those operations already in the air carrying Venezuelan immigrants to El Salvador proceed, with the legal agency claiming the individuals were no longer in US territory.

The judge has been subject to a compliance investigation into whether the Trump administration defied his March court order.
