The championship series is headed to a decisive Game 7 following the Dodgers kept alive their repeat dreams intact on Friday with a three to one win over the Blue Jays in Game 6.
The defending champions halted Toronto’s ninth-inning rally with a dramatic game-ending double play, silencing a home audience that had arrived prepared to cheer the city’s first title in over three decades.
Los Angeles produced all of their offense in the third frame. With two away, Shohei Ohtani was intentionally walked before Will Smith doubled to left field to score Tommy Edman. Freddie Freeman drew a walk to fill the bases, and Betts delivered with a two-RBI hit to left, giving the Dodgers a 3–0 advantage.
Betts’ hit broke a playoff dry spell and revived the title holders' aspirations of being the initial back-to-back championship winners since the Yankees captured three consecutive from 1998 through 2000.
Kevin Gausman had been nearly unhittable to that point, striking out six of the initial seven batters he faced. He struck out eight through three innings, matching a World Series mark, but the third-frame rally proved costly. The Toronto ace finished with 8 Ks over six innings, allowing three runs on three safeties and two walks.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto, in contrast, was solid again under stress. The 27-year-old right-hander outpitched Gausman for the second time in a seven days, giving up a single run on five hits over six frames with six Ks. He boosted his record to 4–1 this playoffs with a 1.56 ERA.
The only run against him resulted from Springer’s two-out base hit in the third inning, scoring Barger, who had hit a double earlier in the inning. That single provided a momentary lift in his return to the lineup after sitting out two games with an oblique injury.
After that, the Los Angeles relievers carried the load. First-year pitcher Justin Wrobleski escaped a jam in the seventh inning, and another rookie Sasaki pitched into the ninth inning before hitting Kirk to open the frame. Addison Barger then hit a double that got stuck under the outfield wall, forcing runners to hold at second and third.
Glasnow, the Dodgers' third game starting pitcher, entered in a relief role and induced a pop fly before Andrés Giménez lined to left field. Hernández caught the ball and fired to second to double off the runner, clinching the win and earning Glasnow his first career save.
The series now boils down to a single contest. Scherzer will take the mound for Toronto, becoming the sole active hurler to start more than one seventh games of the World Series after doing so in 2019 with Washington. The veteran signed a one-year deal to pursue another championship and has been a vocal leader throughout this playoff run.
The Dodgers, looking to become baseball’s initial repeat title winners in almost 25 years, are expected to lean on Shohei Ohtani for a short outing.
