Comedy show presenters recently criticized the destruction of a historic section of the presidential residence and the business backers of a $300 million luxury hall construction.
The 'Late Night' Host
During Thursday's broadcast of his show, Seth Meyers expressed disbelief over the administration's initiative to construct a gilded ballroom. It's already troubling if Trump's main focus was just creating a gilded vanity project for himself, but it’s even more concerning,” he stated. “Because to accomplish it, he’s tearing down a historically significant and cherished landmark.”
The structure in question is the entire East Wing of the presidential residence, which has existed for 120 years. He's demolishing the entire East Wing to build his stupid ballroom. I mean, look at this,” Meyers marveled. “This is like a sequel to a home renovation show called a disastrous remake.”
Unsurprisingly, the president misled about this project.” When he first announced it no demolition and claimed it would not affect the existing structure” because it would be “adjacent without contact”.
In essence, he vowed to treat it like his marriage,” Meyers joked.
Trump said the design evolved following extensive research with top architectural experts in the world”.
“Oh yeah? Who was the architect you consulted, a fictional monster?” Meyers retorted.
Outrage has been swift, if ineffective. The National Trust for Historic Preservation sent a letter Trump stating that the new structure would overwhelm the existing building and asked him to halt work until the plans could be reviewed. “One, I couldn’t agree more with the National Trust for Historic Preservation,” said Meyers. “And two, good luck with your letter.”
It's the epitome of deceptive tactics,” he continued. “He won the election by claiming he was going to make life more affordable for everyday citizens, and currently he's destroying the White House to build himself a lavish personal venue.”
Stephen Colbert
“As of this morning the East Wing resembled a cooked poultry damaged by a pet,” remarked the host on his program. “It's disturbing to witness, I understand that, and the government is aware,” since on that day, security personnel closed access to the Ellipse park where journalists had been capturing the destruction process.
“Well that makes sense – if it's not recorded, they can just assert the East Wing hanged itself in prison,” Colbert quipped.
The host pointed out that it was significant heritage being torn down”, as the East Wing was constructed over a century ago and had been the headquarters for first ladies since the Carter administration. “In fact, the former first lady was in the East Wing, and I truly wish they evacuated her because she’s frequently confused with a beautiful floor lamp,” Colbert joked over an image of her more non-traditional outfits.
The president financed the “ball-doggle” with money from “groveling corporations” including Amazon, Apple, Comcast, Google, Microsoft, T-Mobile, Meta Platforms and Hard Rock International. “And the president requires all the cash he can get,” said Colbert, as the projected expense has already risen from $250 million to over $300m, for a 8,400 sq-meter building, exceeding the size of the current residence itself. “It's comparable to a professional soccer field,” Colbert noted. “So keep in mind, companies, as you bribe the president: play fair.”
The Daily Show
Meanwhile, on the Daily Show, Michael Kosta detailed the rapid progression of the initiative from idea to action. “Initially, he assured that it would be separate from the existing White House and he wouldn’t touch the East Wing. That this construction would remain non-intrusive,” he summarized.
“Recently, there was a minor adjustment when Trump ripped open the eastern facade like it had a collectible toy inside.”
Within days, the whole eastern part was gone. “This is all happening so fast,” he commented. “He has spent 15 years to give us a medical reform, but in 3.5 days he’s demolished half the White House. The president, assure us this will be aesthetically pleasing …”
Not quite – according to a miniature display shown to officials, the ballroom will overshadow the existing residence. “It looks like one of those crabs with the big arms, right?” Kosta chuckled. “I mean, I'm no design expert. But I do know a thing or two about exaggerated displays.”
