Inter forward Lautaro Martínez netted a late double to secure his side a 2-0 win at Pisa, ensuring the away side firmly involved in the Serie A championship battle in spite of a less than convincing display.
Led by manager Cristian Chivu, Inter now sit in third position in the standings with 27 points, tied with second-placed Roma and just one point adrift of leaders Milan. In contrast, Pisa occupy the third bottom position with 10 points.
Inter arrived in Tuscany looking to get back on track after enduring a loss to rivals by Milan recently, which was followed by a European defeat at Atlético Madrid. Nonetheless, they were forced to fight all the way by newly-promoted Pisa. The hosts created numerous chances, but a clinical Inter scored the opener in the 69th minute when Argentinian Martínez smacked a one-time shot into the roof of the net. The forward then finished from point-blank with seven minutes remaining.
The team’s capacity to score even with pressure proved crucial in earning three points.
In Spain, the Basque side staged a dramatic comeback from 2-0 down to equalize at home against Villarreal, only to succumb to a late strike five minutes into stoppage time. Villarreal’s goals came from Ayoze Pérez shortly after the half-hour mark and Alberto Moleiro in the 57th minute, but Carlos Soler quickly reduced the deficit and Ander Barrenetxea equalised three minutes from time. Yet, Moleiro had the final say deep into added time.
Later on La Liga fixture, Real Madrid journey to Girona needing a victory to return to the summit ahead of Barcelona, who secured a 3-1 triumph over Alavés on Saturday.
