Melbourne Storm Player Eli Katoa Ruled Out for Whole 2026 Season Following Multiple Head Impacts and Brain Surgery

The Storm forward Eli Katoa will miss the complete 2026 rugby league season as he focuses on rehabilitation at home in his home state, after returning from a extended period in Auckland where he underwent brain surgery.

What Happened

The 25-year-old athlete suffered three separate head injuries in a single match while representing the Tongan national team in a international fixture versus New Zealand. This led to seizures while off the field, necessitating emergency medical attention.

A medical operation to relieve a brain bleed left the player in the hospital and temporarily grounded to his club base.

The team announced this week that Katoa has finally returned home and is recovering, having also been briefly admitted to a local medical facility.

“His health and recovery are our number one priority,” stated Storm CEO Justin Rodski. “We are thrilled to have him back home and under the supervision of our club doctor and specialist physicians.”

The Road to Recovery

Rodski noted that the athlete is improving each day and is looking forward to continuing his rehabilitation in a home environment.

Importantly, the CEO confirmed that there is no timeframe for his return to health or a potential return to training.

“After discussions with our doctor and neurology experts, Eli will not return to practice this pre-season and won’t be available for the 2026 season,” Rodski declared. “He has a lengthy recovery process ahead of him, and his focus will be on returning to full health before considering a potential comeback to training.”

Rodski concluded by noting that Eli is a much loved and respected part of the squad and organization, and that the Storm family will rally around him and assist him during his rehabilitation period.

League Investigation

The NRL is currently finalizing its investigation into the events that resulted in the required neurosurgery.

The powerful forward, who was named in the competition’s team of the year at the recent Dally M awards, appeared to suffer a concussion during the pregame routine for the international contest.

Despite this, he was allowed to play in the match and suffered two more head impacts before coming off in the second half.

Katoa’s condition deteriorated quickly, and he needed medical oxygen on the sideline before being taken off on a medicab.

The league has attempted to address issues around concussions in the game in recent years, implementing crackdowns on dangerous contact and lengthening the mandatory recovery time for injured athletes.
