Offspring of Previous South African President Jacob Zuma Rejects Terror-Related Accusations as Trial Starts

The child of previous South African Leader Jacob Zuma has denied all charges to terror allegations at the start of her legal proceedings in the coastal city of Durban.

The defendant, 43, is being charged over remarks she posted on social media several years back during fatal demonstrations in South Africa that occurred subsequent to the apprehension of her father.

A seven-day period of chaos in various areas of the country in mid-2021, including plundering and arson, caused at least 300 deceased and led to damage worth an estimated 2.8 billion dollars (£2.2bn).

She has been alleged of encouraging this unrest and confronts charges of encouragement to commit terror-related activities and public violence.

History of the Case

The unrest were concentrated in the regions of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal province and followed the former president's detention for disobeying a judicial ruling to give evidence at an inquiry into accusations of corruption while he was serving as president.

Ms Zuma-Sambudla has always refuted the allegations against her, with her lawyer previously labelling the prosecution's legal argument as unsubstantiated.

She has also consistently said the allegations against her were an effort to settle political disputes with her parent after he started his own political party and competed against the ANC.

Backing and Court Representation

This was echoed by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which claimed the case was an "abuse of power" and a "systematic campaign" of "political and family-related persecution" against the former president and his family.

A few of backers from her group, her party, turned up outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her parent and other organization officials were present at the hearings inside.

Her legal team has stated that the evidence presented by prosecutors is insufficient and lacks concrete evidence for a guilty verdict.
