Outrage Erupts as Trump's Social Media Remarks on Rob Reiner Spurs Fierce Criticism

Figures from across the partisan divide and the entertainment world are coming together to denounce Donald Trump for his comments following the tragic deaths of acclaimed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

A Controversial Online Post

After the couple were found deceased at their Los Angeles residence, Trump took to his platform to label the late director as "anguished and suffering". In a message, he asserted Reiner's demise was "because of the anger he provoked others through his enormous, relentless, and incurable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

His comments quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".

Law Enforcement Update and Detention

Authorities have since announced the arrest of the couple's adult son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in connection with the case. It is reported his bail was set at a substantial sum.

A Wave of Criticism from Celebrities and Politicians

The reaction to Trump's post was swift and harsh.

This is a appalling and despicable comment,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly condemned the statements. She referenced previous comments from Trump about the killing of an activist, asking, "Have you no shame? Is it possible to get any worse?"

The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply stated, "He is a sick man."

Echoing this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "What a contemptible piece of trash."

Senator Chris Murphy commented, "He's just crossed a line. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own demise because they opposed him. So sick."

Rebuke from Within Party

A number of Republican lawmakers also voiced disapproval.

Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". She also mentioned challenges with substance abuse and psychological well-being some families face.

Another Republican representative, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disrespectful" considering the circumstances. He publicly challenged members in his party to justify the statements.

Reiner's Legacy and Views on Trump

Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal critic of Donald Trump. In a previous interview, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also cautioned about the dangers of authoritarian rule should Trump be reelected to power.

"There is authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a danger that democracy collapse around the world."

Despite his pointed criticisms, Reiner had previously shown "absolute horror" and condemned violence for political ends unequivocally following the killing of another political figure.

A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal

Providing a layer of historical connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who shot the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously shared the anecdote of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" while being photographed on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
