The FIFA President Proposes Keeping an Open Mind on Relocating International Football Tournaments Away From Summer.

Infantino has suggested the possibility to further winter World Cups and international club competitions, declaring that the sport should remain open to new ideas about shifting key competitions from the summer period.

Ongoing Conversations for Post-2030 Calendar

Talks are currently happening about the calendar for the period after 2030, which is a particular point of tension due to growing pressure from enlarged events. The global body established a task force to analyze the situation, while the international organization has created a challenge by granting the 2034 tournament to the Gulf country. This competition will probably be organized in colder seasons, similar to Qatar 2022. Infantino suggested football needs to adapt to untying itself from the European summer.

“We're deep into detailed discussions, ongoing conversations are happening,” he said. “This isn't only about a single tournament, it's a general reflection. Even when playing in parts of Europe summer months can be extremely warm.”

Optimizing the Football Calendar

Infantino was speaking during the European club organization conference in the Italian capital. He had expressed similar sentiments to the event's 900 delegates, saying: “We need to examine the globalisation of the international match calendar.” He cited October and March as “the months you can play everywhere.”

A major restructuring like this would cause ructions, even as FIFA's power to implement its wishes may be compromised if a formal complaint regarding the calendar implementation, filed to the European Commission last year by European Leagues, triggers legal processes.

Growing the International Club Competition

The governing body is considering methods to enlarge the Club World Cup. A larger tournament setup might be used in the future, with the potential for entry tournaments that whittles the final number down to thirty-two participants. Infantino mentioned ambitious plans in his Rome speech, stating the organization would “work to see how we can make this event bigger, more successful, with greater influence.”

Potential Hosts for 2029

The Iberian and North African nations are favorites to host the 2029 event, set to happen during summer, though additional candidates remain under evaluation. An early revisit to America could be entertained and sources suggest China, which was scheduled to organize the competition in 2021 prior to coronavirus, continues to show interest.

Officials are thinking about staging the international tournament once every two years post-2029. The Gulf state leads the race to host any 2031 edition, a scenario that might prove simpler to implement should the proposed changes come to fruition given a winter scheduling would become necessary.

Worries Regarding International Matches

Infantino said any permanent shift towards organizing national league matches in foreign countries would be a “big risk”. Ongoing circumstances saw approval given for games in America and Australia, stressing this approval was on an exceptional basis. FIFA's final say is essentially automatic, but Infantino appeared to suggest the concept raised concerns.

“We have a structure whereby we have games at national level, regionally and internationally,” he elaborated. “This is the structure which built soccer the No 1 sport globally. If we disrupt this system, we endanger everything.”
