The Game Awards' Future Class Initiative Seems to Be Finished

Beyond recognizing video games in various award categories, The Game Awards in the past showcased a Future Class program. Those selected as part of the Future Class were intended to reflect the “optimistic, daring, and welcoming future” of video games, akin to how certain annual lists spotlight influential figures. But, the Future Class designation is being retired, according to program organizers.

More Than Simply Honor: The Purpose of the Program

Future Class was more than a nod to standout individuals in the video game world. It acted as a nexus for career networking and career development. Although certain past members shared appreciation for their involvement with Future Class, others believed that it did not do enough for those involved. Complaints was directed at multiple areas of the program, ranging from the lack of assistance to attend the show to not paying for guiding new members.

Past Issues and Program Hiatus

Future Class appeared to be paused in 2024, when TGA did not include the award in its programming. This absence came after a previous year issue where a number of Future Class participants signed a letter encouraging the event to use its platform to express solidarity with a particular global crisis.

"You gave us the role of ambassadors of a improved world — therefore, our duty to you and all the gamers globally drives us to speak out," the letter read.

It further contended that the video game sector often dehumanized certain groups, and called on developers in the industry to make changes.

Official Announcement and Online Updates

Though this is the second consecutive year that The Game Awards has not nominated a Future Class cohort, program organizers had not officially announced its end before. The absence has been noted, partly, due to the seeming deletion of any trace of Future Class on the TGA’s official site. The key organizer did not immediately respond to a media inquiry.

Next year’s Game Awards are planned for Dec. 11.
