It might not have been at the equivalent scale as pardoning holiday birds, but the county's top official conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She is worthy of this pardon. Her criminal record is spotless,” stated the mayor in a speech with clear references to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a second term in office.
“Except perhaps for eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “I hope she experiences a prosperous future without fear.”
The gathering, either celebrating or rejecting the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was created to emulate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The swine, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “6-7” – inspired by a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The craze became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently made “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
This particular pig is now set to enjoy its days at a rural sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to open the end-of-year celebrations,” said the event host, in a decidedly positive message.
“It captures the essence of Miami: joyful, varied, and grounded in customs that unite the community. Annually, we are delighted to mark heritage and mercy in a way unique to Miami.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of croquettes and strong coffee as they celebrated Six Seven’s big moment.
