A uniquely yellow-fronted apartment block in the background helped us verify the video.

We are analyzing video footage and photographs posted this morning that depict the aftermath of a reported car bomb blast that Russian officials state fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.

Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he later died to his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.

Our starting point to verify the location from which the pictures were from relied on posts indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.

We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow hue of a nearby residential complex seen in the footage.

Identifying additional structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the pictures were taken.

Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the images had not been manipulated.
