UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller That Blends Silent Hill and Social Deduction Gameplay

The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled several intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.

"It's a unique experience where a girl containing multiple human souls inside her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Consciousness

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Within her reside four separate personas, each with unique fears and motivations. These entities can seize control at will, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.

Based on showcased footage, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy medical facility, though other scenes depict the main character navigating a desolate chapel.

A World of Individual Horror

"What are you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to other people can activate something primal inside us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are specific to every individual."

The core gameplay loop revolves around controlling whichever soul surfaces at any given time. However, these identities will change against your will as you play. While exploring, every persona's fears become amplified and assault the protagonist in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision

Initially, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is filled with orderlies who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the lobby have large flowers growing from their necks should be. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."

Once players believes a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, since every entity can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.

"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The final entity standing could be a fake. In any case, your decisions are final."

UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
