Winter Weather Systems Take Five Victims in Gaza Amid Desperate Conditions in Temporary Shelters.

Strong winter gusts brought walls down upon flimsy tents sheltering people uprooted by conflict in Gaza, killing no fewer than four people. This tragedy highlights the perilous situation that continue after over 24 months of intense airstrikes and critical lack of humanitarian assistance.

Truce Provides No Relief from Severe Weather

While a truce has been active from October, aid groups report that Palestinians do not have the adequate housing necessary to survive frequent cold-weather events.

Officials at Shifa hospital, which took in the victims, said on this week that the dead were two women, a young female, and a man.

Separately, the local health authority stated on Tuesday that a one-year-old boy died of extreme cold during the night.

"The world has allowed us to witness death in every possible way," said Bassel Hamouda following the burial. "It’s true the shelling may have paused for now, but we have seen every conceivable cause of death in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Crushed in Shelter Collapse

As per Shifa hospital, three people of a single family — elderly a man, his 15-year-old relative, and his daughter-in-law — were fatally injured when an eight-metre tall wall fell onto their tent in a area near the sea of Gaza City. No fewer than 5 additional people were injured in the incident.

Their relatives on Tuesday started removing the rubble that had buried their family and reconstructing the temporary homes for survivors.

Aid Distribution and Continuing Crisis

United Nations agencies and its aid organization allies were handing out shelter kits, tarps, blankets and clothes as well as nutrition and hygiene supplies throughout Gaza, stated the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs.

The majority of Palestinians live in improvised shelters because their houses were reduced to ruins during the hostilities. Aid groups contend not enough shelter materials are entering Gaza during the ceasefire.

Casualty Figures Since the Ceasefire

The Gaza health ministry, which is part of the administration, reports over 440 individuals have been fatally shot by gunfire and their remains brought to hospitals after the ceasefire went into effect. The authority keeps comprehensive fatality data that are considered generally reliable by UN agencies and independent experts.

James Elder, spokesperson for the UN children's fund, said on that day that at least one hundred children under the age of 18 – 60 boys and 40 girls – had been lost their lives since the ceasefire started due to armed actions, such as drone strikes, air raids, tank shelling and employment of bullets. Those figures, he explained, reflected cases where sufficient details had been gathered to warrant recording, but the total toll is believed to be greater. He added that hundreds of children had been injured.

"Although 'bombings and shootings have decreased' under the ceasefire, they have not ceased," the spokesperson informed journalists at a press conference in the Swiss city by video link from the Strip. "So what the international community now calls quiet would be considered a catastrophe anywhere else," he said.

Another Winter of Hardship

Gaza’s population of more than 2 million people has been fighting to keep the cold weather and storms at bay while enduring lack of humanitarian aid and a lack of more substantial temporary housing, which is urgently needed during the colder season. It’s the 3rd cold season since the conflict involving Israel and Hamas began on a date in late 2023, when fighters stormed into Israeli territory and murdered approximately 1,200 individuals and abducted 251 others into Gaza.

Gaza’s health ministry reports over 71,400 people have been killed in the subsequent retaliatory offensive.
